The deposit and the check-in are not the same job. One is money that already hit or is about to. The other is the yes or no that keeps later housing checks from pausing.
Miss two months in a row and Post-9/11 housing can pause. Montgomery can stop the same month you skip. Either way, August 31 is the check-in date in VA's own example.
If school started August 5, you verify on or after August 31. If you were in class any part of August, you still do that check-in for August.
This is a cash-flow note, not a pitch to enroll. Check your own enrollment and payments with VA before you treat September rent as covered.
The housing check is not the verification
A deposit in the bank is last month getting paid. The check-in is a separate yes or no: is the enrollment your school sent to VA still the same?
For Post-9/11 GI Bill, VA says it processes the payment on the first day of every month. It can take up to 5 days to arrive. If the money shows up before you verify, you still verify. Missing two months in a row is what pauses the housing check and any extra monthly kicker.
For Montgomery GI Bill, VA will not send the monthly payment if you do not verify.
As of January 2026, VA says all education beneficiaries, including Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (Chapter 35) students, must verify enrollment each month to get benefit payments. You can do that by text, email, Ask VA, or online.
Who has to do this
On Post-9/11 GI Bill, you verify if you get a monthly housing check or kicker payments, you are in a college or a non-college training program, and you are enrolled half time or more. You do not verify for apprenticeship, on-the-job training, flight, or correspondence training.
You have to do it yourself. The school cannot do it for you. Giving your phone number to the school does not mean the GI Bill text system has it. GI Bill uses a different contact system than VA.gov or My HealtheVet.
What the yes or no actually means
This is not "did you sit in class." It is "is the enrollment your school sent to VA still the same."
If it changed, say no and talk to the school staffer who sends your enrollment to VA. If VA pays you for classes you dropped, that extra pay becomes a debt.
If you already got this month's housing check, you still verify.
If you finish or graduate this month, and you were enrolled as certified, the answer is yes for that last month.
How to do the check-in
You can verify by text, email, Ask VA, or online.
- Text. VA uses short code 44354. Reply Yes or No. VA will never ask for personal information by text. You cannot use Google Voice or WhatsApp.
- Email. Look for a message from do-not-reply@notifications.va.gov.
- Online. You need a verified VA.gov account through ID.me or Login.gov. The form asks two things: your credit hours or clock hours, and the start and end dates of enrollment for the month.
- Phone. Education Call Center at 1-888-442-4551. Wait times can be long. Outside the United States, call 001-918-781-5678. VA's verify page, last updated July 27, 2026, says they are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET.
If you never got a text, do not wait. Verify on VA.gov or call. A quiet phone is not proof that September is already covered.
What not to assume
Do not assume the August housing check means September is already cleared. Do not assume a text that never arrived is something you can sit on. Do not assume the school verified for you. Do not assume a Google Voice number will get the text. Do not skip the last month because you already finished. Do not say yes if you dropped a class.
This is not a pitch to enroll. If you are already in class, the job now is to set the August 31 check-in.

- Set a phone reminder for August 31. That is the date in VA's own example.
- Check the number that texts you. It should be 44354.
- If you never got a text, do not wait. Verify on VA.gov or call 1-888-442-4551.
- Write your credits or clock hours. Also write the start and end dates your school sent to VA for August.
- If those dates changed, say no. Then call the school staffer who handles GI Bill enrollment so VA does not overpay you.
- If the enrollment is still the same, say yes. That includes a last month after you finish, if you were enrolled as certified.
- Do not borrow for September rent because a text sat unanswered. The check-in is what keeps the next housing check from going quiet.
